Wynn Jeffries is a typical girl next door. Well, I am not referring
to the girl you see in Bollywood movies who are happy and contempt with
everything around them and believe to live in a perfect world. Wynn is like you
and me (at least me!), who at the age of 28 is not sure what to do
with her life. She is surrounded by people who loves her, but she still feels
incomplete. Working as a bartender, which was supposed to be a three month job
to save money for her world trip at the age of 23, she finds herself stuck in
the same place and no plans for future. When everyone from her high-school has
moved on with their lives, she is still searching a reason for her existence. Things
go from bad to worse when her dear grandmother passes away weeks after Wynn has
a spite with her and never gets a chance to say sorry! When she thinks nothing
worst can happen anymore, her high school crush Oliver Reeves, who is now a rock star, comes to town to
think about his future – a future in which he wants her for reasons she is not sure
of.
But, things start to change when she sets her eyes on a
newspaper clipping from early 1900s. What seemed like a promising adventure to
learn more about her great-grandmother turns into journey of self-realization.
Will Wynn be able to uncover a family secret that had been left unearthed for almost a
100 years? Will she be able to realize what she really wants to do with her
life?
Well, the above two paragraphs is more or less the crux of
the story. I can actually complete the story in another two more paragraphs because that’s all there is to the story. So I don't want to ruin it for you! (chuckles). The initial few chapters are very
predictable. You listen to the ramblings of Wynn which mostly revolves around her high
school crush, lost dreams due to family circumstances, mid-life crises,
so on and so forth. However, the story becomes interesting once we
start to learn about Lola, Wynn’s great-grandmother. The approach the author
has taken to throw light on Lola’s life is also different – through a series
of journal entries. You tend to think that you might get bored after few
entries, but it just gets more gripping. When Wynn and Oliver’s love is so
predictable, Lola’s and Michael’s is very subtle, deep and fascinating. Another
attention-grabbing factor about the story is the parallel comparison which the author
brings between Wynn and Lola. Even though it is not brought out obviously,
towards the end of the book it grows on to you naturally.
I rate the book at 2.5/5. Well, that is my rating though! People in Goodreads seem to have cried after reading this book! So, I better stop my review of this book right here!
